"Reinventing how we view short run orders"
Six Color Print = One Screen....here's how

The Platen Register Press (PRP!") was invented by Jim Harris, a vocational school instructor in Southern California. The invention of the PRP!" was facilitated due to several reasons: limited workspace area, a limited school budget, and the number of students in his classroom. Each semester, 15 to 20 students would create a four-color design to be printed on a small number of t-shirts. Some students would also print the design on paper using the offset presses. There were six offset presses and only one silkscreen press making it very difficult for the students to finish their projects on time.

The solution to these problems was to utilize techniques and processes common to the offset printing industry. The "pin register system" was created to expose negatives on to the printing plates ensuring accurate registration of multiple colors. The next piece of the puzzle was to make it possible to print one to two colors one day and the other colors the next day. The portable shirt board was designed to solve this particular problem. Each shirt had its own board that was locked in place with the "pin register systems" ensuring a perfect register of each color regardless of how many times the board was removed and replaced. In theory, there are "no limits" on the number of colors that could be printed on a single shirt/project.

What is the largest image I can print on the PRP!"
15"wide by 18"high

Can I print only one color on the PRP!"
Yes
, but the PRP!" was specifically designed to print more than one color.

How many colors can the PRP!" print?
Theoretically the PRP!" can print an infinite number of colors, it is recommended that  4 to 8 colors are printed.

Does this press really work?
Yes, the PRP!" has been in the local Southern California market for over 3 years.  Most sales of the PRP!" have been done through "word of mouth".

I currently own a large print shop, how will this help me and are there any other printers using this press?
As a large print shop, it's not uncommon to print samples for distribution or for a bid on a project.  Most printers will utilize their several thousand dollar printer that is made for high production runs for this type of work.  The PRP!" allows larger print shop owners to print sample at a fraction of their normal cost.  The condensing of 4-6 colors onto one screen (dependant on the size of the screen and image) cuts the cost of printing samples from 75-84%.   In California, there are small, medium, and large sized printers that are using the PRP!" for various reasons.

I currently own a 4 color press, how can I make this press work with my current press?
This is probably the most commonly asked question.  Interwell Enterprises is currently working on a platen that will be outfitted to a 4-8 color rotary press and the PRP!".  Most printers that have heard about this development are excited with this prospect since it will  allow them to print an excess of 8 colors and more  importantly, shorten their production time.

How accurate is the registration?
We say that the registration is as accurate as you can see.   When the register plate holds the ink pattern from the screen, it is up to the individual printer to line it up with the design.  The best method for this is to be looking directly down on the design, this ensures that the registration will be exact.

How does the PRP!" differ from other presses?
The first aspect is that the PRP!" does not look like a mulit-color press.  The most common mistake is assuming that the PRP!" is a single color, single station press.  This is not a single color, single station press.

Another aspect of the PRP!" is that it will allow a silk screen printer to reduce the cost of setup.  Most silk screen presses need four screens to print a four color job, or six screens to print a six color job, and so on.  The PRP!" is the only press that will allow you to minimize the cost of setup by eliminating screens.  Because of the unique design of the PRP!", you'll be able to fit a four to six color pocket sized design onto one screen.

Do I need special tools to register one color to another?
No.  The registering is one of the easy steps, we provide you with a special polycarbonate plate to register the design on your screen to the design itself.

What is the largest screen that can be used on the PRP!"?
Ideally 18"x20" inside dimension.  Larger than 24"x24" may be harder to handle.

How much floor space do I need?
About 2'x2' feet of space.  You can clamp the PRP!" to a workbench or bolt it.

ScreenVac
$1099.00

  • Eliminates the need for a rubber blanket due to the patented ScreenVac plate
  • Automatic shutoff timer for different types of emulsions
  • Can be used with or without the vacuum pump
  • Different ScreenVac plate sizes are available
  • Compact design
  • ScreenVac plate can be fitted onto some existing exposure units

Mr. Farris designed a process that would make exposing a screen less costly, more effective and surprisingly simple. Most units utilize a rubber blanket that envelops the screen, exposing it to a high concentration of UV. While the ScreenVac!" system is similar, the one main difference in comparison is that the ScreenVac!" substitutes a rubber blanket with a vacuum plate.

Rubber blankets are both costly and ineffective when a pin-sized hole is detected. The two most common solutions were to either replace the blanket itself or "patch" the hole. Replacing the entire blanket can get expensive while "patching" the hole would only be a short-term solution leading to a eventual bigger problem. The ScreenVac!" uses what we call a "vacuum plate". The plate is not only very effective, but can also withstand constant use over a long period of time. The vacuum plates edges are molded with a soft foam padding to allow flexing when a vacuum is applied. This superior method not only prolongs the life of the unit, but the replacement cost of the vacuum plate is substantially less than that of a rubber blanket.

length: 30"
width: 24"
height: 12"
weight: 70lbs

Items included in purchase:

  • The ScreenVac!" Exposure Unit (comes equipped with vacuum pump and timer)
  • The ScreenVac!" plate, special UVT acrylic
(*Standard size: 15.5" x 18"-will fit 23"x31" screens with leg adjustments)
  • 7 unfiltered ultraviolet fluorescent blubs

*Screen Vac!" plate only needs to cover the inside dimensions of the screen.  Screen must be covered in emulsion for the Screen Vac!" plate to work properly.

What is the largest image I can expose on the ScreenVac!"
22"wide by 28"high

What if I need a larger plate for my press?
We make 3 sizes of plates for the different screens that are available in the market today.

How detailed is the image I expose on a screen?
The ScreenVac!" exposure unit exposes sharp edges, half-tones, tints and fine details easily.

Since the screen is pulled towards the plate, are there any problems with registration later?
No.  The foam rubber molding on the vacuum plate is only 1/8" thick.  The silk molds itself to the plate; an example of this is when you expose your artwork onto the screen.  There is no pulling that's involved, only the molding effect on the edges of the screen which does not have a bearing on the registration.  Most professional silk screeners know that having a design that runs all the way to the edge of the screen will pose a problem printing, whether it was exposed with a rubber blanket or the ScreenVac!" plate.

Can I expose aluminum frame screens?
Yes.  You can expose both wood and aluminum frame screens.

How does this machine expose screens without the customary rubber blanket?
The ScreenVac!" uses a patented screen plate made from a special UVT acrylic.  The screen plate replaces the rubber blanket for the exposure process.

Can I just order the ScreenVac!" for my existing exposure unit?
Yes!  We have customers that ask for the ScreenVac!" plate  to retrofit onto their existing exposure unit.  Here's an example of one (coming soon)
